Homage to the Hazel Woods Series
October-December 2024
This is a series of drypoint intaglio prints on polycarbonate plates, most of them hand-cut into amorphous shapes. I did not use any acids, etching, or toxic processes, instead playing with with selective inking and ink removal. They were made in the Burren College of Art Print Studio using water based inks on Reeves BFK paper.
Inspired by a long time love of the hazel woods within the Burren, Ireland, and specifically with a patch of hazel woods along the Wood Loop that goes around Ballyvaughan within the Burren. I would go out into the hazel woods to gather inspiration, then come back to the studio to turn these freshly gathered memories into artworks. I would not sketch out my compositions first, opting to instead draw into the plate surface with a sharp tool, calling to life ferns, moss, fungi, hazel trees, and vines, all tangled up in each other.
